What do you guys do when it rains and you’ve already been to the swimming pool, had play dates, and spent a couple of days at home drawing, painting, playing, and watching movies? You’ve probably heard this before, but we are so lucky to live where we live. There are so many things to do and this one that I’m going to introduce now is perfect for rainy days! Or if it gets too hot and sunny… Or if you just need a cuppa and a chance to sit down for a few minutes.
Meerkat Play Cafe on Lower Mounttown Road, Dun Laoghaire is a lovely, family run indoor play cafe geared towards kids aged 0-5 and their carers. There are plenty of toys for the kids, cafe area for the adults, and designated parking spaces outside the play cafe.
The Play Cafe consists of two parts, the cafe area and the play area. I think it’s great that the play area is separated from the cafe, as this ensures the play area is safe and clean. You can still keep an eye on your little ones while you’re in the cafe and you are never far away from them! The play area floor is covered with soft flooring and prior to entering the play area, kids are asked to take their shoes off and adults should wear shoe covers (provided by the play cafe). Food and drinks are not allowed in the play area.
There are plenty of toys to play with too. Bigger toys such as a car, a kitchen, a shop, and even an area with balls in it (our two love it!). There are also smaller toys like a lovely wooden dolls house, fire engine, baby toys etc. There is also a little corner with books and a sofa.
In the cafe, they serve McCabe’s coffee, a selection of tea, scones, cupcakes, pies, sandwiches for lunch and drinks and treats for kiddies. They also have a good selection of magazines and you might be lucky enough to get a chance to have a quick read! The owners are very friendly and hands on. On top of serving you the treats, they also keep a close eye on the play area to make sure the kids are safe and happy.

It’s not a massive place, but I think that makes it even more compelling. Even when there are quite a few kids in there, it never gets completely crazy. It’s a great place for meeting friends! My two are 2 and 4 and they both love this place. They keep asking me every week: “Mummy, are we going to the play cafe today?”
