Sleeping Like a Baby

It’s one of those days when I’m really happy I didn’t have to go to work this morning. It was hard enough to get Mr Messer to Montessori in time! We’ve been having a bit of trouble with sleep lately… Missy Messer wakes up anything between 2-5 times a night (every night!) for the past six months or so. She used to be such a good sleeper too and I have no idea why she keeps waking up!

Looking cute in her new bed!

At first, I thought it’s the usual suspect, teeth. I remember Mr Messer being like that when he was getting his eye teeth. I ended up sleeping on a mattress in his room so we would all get at least some sort of sleep, but after about four weeks when the teeth had cut through, he was back to his normal sleep routine. Missy Messer’s eye teeth have come through during these months of sleeplessness but I have not seen any improvement. Once in a blue moon she sleeps through the night, but the rest of the time I’m up with her quite a lot.

Then I thought it must be the little rabbit she has in with her. When she wakes up and can’t find it, she calls for me. Once I give her the rabbit, she’s goes back to sleep very quickly. But what can I do about that, staple the rabbit in her hand?? And come think of it, half the time she has it in her hand already by the time I go there but she’s still calling for me. Maybe it’s becoming a habit and wants to see me, to make sure we’re all still here?

The latest thing I tried was to move her into a toddler bed from the cot. I thought maybe she was getting too big for the cot and didn’t have enough space to fling the arms and legs around (you could hear the occasional thump and bang against the railings as she was sleeping). She’s been in her big girl’s bed only for four nights so it’s a bit too early to say whether it’s working or not, but I can’t say it’s looking positive. Last night was one of the worst we’ve had for a while. I lost count at around 4.30am having been to her room at least 5 times already…

It’s probably a combination of all of the above, and the position of the moon, the feng shui in her room and the rest. Who knows?! I just keep telling myself, this too shall pass as I pour myself another cup of coffee.
